Noah and the Whale '5 Years Time' Analysis

The beginning of Noah and the Whale's video '5 Years Time' begins with opening credits which gives the audience the impression that they are about to watch a film. The font and the background together have a vintage and  shaky look to them which makes the video look old and dated. This is created through the background made to look like an old vintage rug which clashes with the bright yellow retro-like font which gives a very effective vintage look. The film theme carries on throughout the video as the band members names appear on the screen when each member is shown which continues the opening credits look. This shot is a mid shot which is also the first shot which shows the location of the video. It looks like an old house with the plain sofa and dull pictures on the wall however it becomes obvious at the end of the video that they are in fact playing in a pub. The pillows with 'love' embroidered on them relate to the song as they are lyrics in it.
As each band member is introduced they are each shown to be playing instruments which is an important convention of the indie genre as it is common for artists to be shown playing their own instruments. It is important to show this as it keeps the audience focused on the fact that this is a music video and not a film. Costumes are also an important part of the video as it gives away the genre, overall look of the band as well as the  style of music video. The vintage theme continues throughout - the 1940's style clothing, the slightly sepia colour grading and the use of a hand held camera throughout gives the feel that the video has been home made.
Indie videos are known to be fairly random and original which is what this band has incorporated into their video as they have represented the band name and the name of the song in video through the use of giant balloons in numerous shots. A few times during the video the lyrics match what is going on in the shot. For example, the lyrics "I put my hands over your eyes but you peep through" are clearly shown in this close-up. These tend to be significant lyrics which are shown in the shot. In this video the chorus tends to be represented in the video with lyrics. "Sun, sun, sun", "fun, fun, fun" and "love, love, love" lyrics are all shown in the video with dance movements.

Finally the video has a performance aspect to it as audience realises that they are in fact performing in a pub. All the band members are shown to finally be performing together on a stage. This is typical of an indie music video as they tend to either focus on the band playing throughout the video or towards the end.
